Pros-and-cons lists treat every point as equal and often grow until both sides look crowded. A better small framework separates requirements from preferences, gives important criteria more weight, and acknowledges what you do not know.

Remove options that fail a must-have
Write the non-negotiable constraints first: maximum budget, deadline, accessibility need, location, compatibility, or risk limit. An option that fails a true constraint should not remain in the scoring table merely because it has attractive extras.
Weight three to five criteria
Give each remaining criterion a weight from one to five, then score each option on the same scale. Multiply score by weight. The numbers do not create truth; they reveal which assumptions are carrying the decision and where options are genuinely close.
Mark uncertainty separately
A confident three and a guessed three are not equivalent. Mark weak evidence and identify the one fact most likely to change the result. One phone call, trial, quote, or reference check may be more useful than another hour rearranging scores.
Run the regret and reversibility check
Ask which error would be easier to repair and what you would regret not trying. If the calculated winner feels clearly wrong, investigate why instead of blindly obeying the table. The feeling may reveal a missing criterion—or simple fear that should not dominate the choice.

Three to five is usually enough for an everyday choice. More criteria can hide the few factors that actually determine the outcome and create false precision.
Should I always follow the highest score?
No. Use the result to expose assumptions. If the winner feels wrong, identify the missing criterion, weak evidence, or consequence that the numbers failed to represent.
